Destinations, Landscape in Laos
Attapeu

- Attapeu is the province located in the most southeastern tip of Laos. It is also the best know for the Bolaven Plateau, sharing borders with Sekong in the North, Champasack in the West, Viet Nam in the East and Cambodia in the South. The Bolaven Plateau is located in the Champasack Province and easily accessed from Pakse. Attapeu is where one can find many minority peoples. Nine major tribes are in Attapu: Alak, Katang, Kaleum, Katou, Suay, Nge, Lave, Tahoy, Nyajeung. The capital town, samakkhixay is built in a large picturesque valley surrounded by mountains and the loop upstream. Attapeu Province is rugged, wild and very scenic. Transportation is very difficult, especially by land in the rainy season. Parts of the Ho Chi Minh Trail can be explored from Attapeu, although using a local guide is essential. In the early morning you can visit the traditional market, where many different minorities go to buy and sell their products.

Champasack

- Champasack lies to the Southwest in Laos. The capital city is Pakse, located at the confluence of the Mekong and the Sedon rivers. Southeast Asia's biggest waterfall, Khone Pha Pheng, is within easy reach by boat or by road. This is one of the main political and economic centers of Lao P.D.R. The people of Champasack Province settle along the bank of Kong Se Done river. In this province you will find ancient temples which were influenced from the Angkor people who settled in Cambodia. There are many different minorities in Champasack whom have their own language, culture and lifestyles. The distance from Vientiane to Pakse, the provincial capital of Champasack is 610 kilometers by Route 13 (south) via the provinces of Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Savannakhet and Salavan.

Savannakhet

- Savannakhet town is situated on the banks of the Mekong river opposite Mukdahan in Thailand.  The province bridges the country between Thailand and Vietnam and the town is a very active junction for trade between the two countries.  The town itself can be easily explored by foot and has a number of interesting temples, including Vietnamese temple and school and a large Catholic church. Much of the town's architecture is French Colonial. Numerous examples of French architecture tell of the town's importance. There are 11 ethinc minorities include Lowland Lao, Phoutai, Thai Dam, Katang, Mongkong, Vali, Lava, Soui, Kapo, Kaleung and Ta-Oi.

Khammuane

- Khammouane is located in central Laos bordering Bolikhamxay and Savannakhet Provinces. Khammouane covers about 16,000 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 330,000, mostly engaged in agriculture. The Mekong River Valley in the west is framed by the Annamite Mountain Range which separates Khammouane from Vietnam to the east.

Bolikhamxay

- Bolikhamxay (or Bolikhamsay) Province is located in central Laos in the narrow "neck", with moderately high mountains sloping Southwest into the Mekong River valley. Bolikhamxay can be reached by bus, 150 km or about 3 hours leaving from the Morning Market bus station.

Vientiane Capital

- In 1563, King Setthathirat made Vientiane (in Lao language Vieng Chan) the capital of the kingdom of Lane Xang . The two most important Wats of Vientiane, Wat That Luang and Wat Phra Keo date back to that time. In 1827 Vientiane had been conquered and sacked by a Siamese army. For decades the town lay in ruins, until the French, at the beginning of their colonial reign rebuilt it. However, Vientiane today does not feature French-influenced architecture to the same extent as Phnom Penh and Saigon . Instead there is a strong Thai influence. With barely half a Million inhabitants Vientiane is the smallest capital in Southeast Asia (except for Bandar Seri Begawan of Brunei ).

Vangvieng

- Vangvieng is situated 152 kilometers from Vientiane on Route 13 (north). This small village is set against a backdrop of dramatic Limestone Mountains. Vangvieng is an ideal place to break the long journey from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. Bamboo cabins and guesthouse are both available for those seeking overnight accommodation.

Xieng Khouang

- Xieng Khoang is located 435 kilometers northeast of the Vientiane capital. Most of its landscape consist of mountains and hills. Xieng Khouang Province offers the awesome beauty of high green mountains and rugged karst formations. Northeastern Laos.

Luang Prabang

- Luang Prabang is situated in the centre of northern Laos, bordering provinces of Oudomxay, Phongsaly and Houaphanh to the north, Vientiane and Sayabouly to the south and southwest and Xiengkhouang to the east.

Oudomxay

Oudomxay is populated by some 23 ethnic minorities mainly Hmong, Ekor (Akha) and Khamu. Oudomxay's proximity to China has brought the province rapid economic growth and infrastructure developments, including good road access to the provincial capital, Xay District.

Sayabouly

- Sayabouly Province is situated in the northwest of Laos , sharing borders with Vientiane Province and Luang Prabang Province in the east, and Thailand in the west. This mountainous province has several peaks with altitudes of more than 1000 meters. Travel to this rugged landscape will reveal many beautiful mountains and flower gardens. The local people earn their living via agricultural products such as growing rice, cucumbers, cotton, cabbage, beans and sugarcane. Elephant continue to be used for loading and transporting heavy items.

Bokeo

Bokeo is located in the northern part of Laos, 70% of the land is mountainous. Bokeo shares a 35 km on Land and the rest a 127 km of the Mekong River border with Thailand to the west, a 98 km with Myanmar, to the northeast with Luang Namtha and to the southeast with Oudomxay to the south with Xayabouly.

Luang Namtha

Luang Namtha province is located in the upper Northwest of Laos, bordered by Myanmar in the Northwest, China to the North, Oudomxay province to the Southeast, and Bokeo province to the Southwest. 39 ethnic groups make up the population of 140,000, in Luang Namtha. Each group having its own dialect, culture and lifestyle, but coexisting peacefully - a reflection of traditional solidarity. Most people in Luang Namtha live in small rural villages and practice agricultures as their main occupation.

Phongsaly

Phongsaly Province is one of the romotest of the Lao PDR Provinces, and is dominated by rugged, mountainous terrain and an abundance of thick forests and fast-flowing rivers. It is inhabited by 25 different ethnic groups, each with their own culture, traditions, costumes, and languages. Most of the land is between 500 and 1,500 metres elevation, which moderates the heat of the surrounding areas of Southeast Asia and makes the climate more suitable for trekking and other physical activities. The forests contain an abundance of animal, bird, insect and plant life, and there are certainly many undiscovered species, new to science.
