Around Phnom Penh

 Udong

Sample ImageUdong is not a big hitter in the attraction league but makes a good escape from the bustle of Phnom Penh for those with time. Located 40km north of Phnom Penh, it served as the capital of Cambodia under several kings between 1618 and 1866.
Phnom Udong slightly south of the old capital, consists of who hills joined by a ridge with lush views of the countryside and its innumerable sugar palms.

Tonle Bati

Sample ImageThere are not one but two Angkorian temples here at Tonle Bati, making a good introduction to Cambodia’s ancient temples if you haven’t been to Angkor yet, but not so interesting if you have. Ta Prohm Temple is the more evocative, built by King Jayavarman VII on the site of a 6th-century Khmer shrine. Just northwest of Ta Prohm Temple, a long narrow peninsula juts into the Bati river. Each Sunday it is packed with picnickers and vendors selling food, drinks and fruit – but negotiate prices before ordering.

Phnom Chisor

Sample Image Phnom Chisor offers some spectacular views of the surrounding countryside from its summit, although the landscape is more like the Gobi Desert when it’s in the dry season. The main temple, which gauds the eastern face of the brick in the 11th century. On the plain beneath Phnom Chisor are two more small Khmer temples, Sen Thmol and Sen Ravang and the sacred pool of Tonle Om.

Takeo & Phnom Da

Sample ImageTakeo is an unremarkable provincial capital about 75km south of Phnom Penh, but the surrounding region was once the remarkable capital of Chenla, a civilization that predated the Angkorian era by several centuries.
Phnom Da is a small, hilltop literate temple affording spectacular views across the rice fields during the dry season.

Kirirom national park

Sample ImageThe hill station of Kirirom, a slice of Europe in Cambodia, is set amid elevated pine forest. It is one of the few national parks to have a community tourism programmed up and running at nearby Chambok and attractions include a 40m-high waterfall, traditional ox-cart rides. Proceeds from the educational walks are plumbed back into the local community.
