Cycle Tour of Southern Laos

Itinerary: Vientiane - Laung Nam Tha - Muang Sing - Udom Xai - Luang Prabang

TOUR SUMMARY

This tour is a journey through the remote mountains of Northern Laos. Starting in the sleepy capital, Vientiane, we fly north to Luang Nam Tha near the Chinese border, where Akha, Hmong, Kamu are among the various tribal people that live in these remote valleys or on isolated mountainsides. Cycling along empty roads through outstanding landscapes, riders experience the rugged beauty and culture that as yet is still largely not influenced by the west. The tour ends in Luang Prabang and we spend the final Days of the tour exploring the temples, discovering the French colonial splendour and surrounding attractions of Luang Prabang.

RIDING PROFILE

We ride just under 600 km mostly on fairly good asphalt. There is just enough broken road or unpaved dirt roads to make a mountain bike with front suspension necessary. The route is point - to - point and fully supported by our back - up team in a big six-wheel truck. Northern Laos is mountainous and although there are no excessively long climbs there are very few flat sections. Traffic is exceptionally light and on many Days we will see no cars at all. Most riding Days are fairly full and guests should expect some long Days in the saddle. We spend two Days traveling by riverboat and there is time at the end of the trip to discover Luang Prabang. Accommodation is varied and includes comfortable and charming 3 and 4 star hotels in Vientiane and Luang Prabang as well as some quite basic hotels.

Cycle Tour of Southern Laos

Itinerary: Ubon Ratchatani - Champasak - Don khong - Don Det - Tad fane - Tad Lo - Pakse

TOUR SUMMARY
This biking sojourn goes through the Southern Lowlands from Pakse down to the Cambodian Border before heading north and then east to the fertile lands of the coffee rich Bolevan Plateau. Starting in Ubon Ratchatani, we cross the border at Chongmek and ride to the ancient site of Wat Phu situated in Champasak province where we visit pre - angkorian temples. Cruising down the Mekong River visiting Si Phan Don or 4000 Islands as it is more commonly known. We ride quiet country roads to the Khan Phapeng waterfalls and then onwards to the bottom of Don Kon to search for the elusive Irrawaddy Dolphins. Climbing along lush vegetation, we reach the Bolevan Plateau for 2 nights before heading west back to Pakse.

RIDING PROFILE
We cover nearly 500 kilometres in 7 cycling Days and much of the terrain is quite flat except for the Days up on the plateau. The road surfaces are mixed: most Days we ride on reasonably good quality asphalt roads, but there are enough rides on badly broken roads or dirt tracks to mean you will need a mountain bike with front shocks. There is nothing technical involved on this tour and anyone, assuming they are fit enough, will be able to join no matter how little cycling experience they have. This trip is fully and the support vehicle is stacked with fruit and drinks.
